We tried to do our best to make this project understandable, easy to search information and well-aranged. There are 6 different topics: the location of the city and its climate, historical development, population, industry, administrative division and transportation. In the first part, we present average statements. In the topic of the population we present several tables and the data there are expressed in percents. In the fifth topic (administrative division) we provide a whole list of neighbourhoods in Brno.

1. THE LOCATION OF THE CITY AND THE CLIMATE

- Brno lies in Central Europe

- the second biggest city in the Czech Republic

- It's always been an important trade junction

- It is surrounded with woods and hills in the North and lowlands in the South

- There are two rivers flowing through the city, Svratka and Svitava

- It's always been in touch with Vienna, because it's only 130 km far away

- Brno is situated on a dividing line between Czech Highland and Carpathians

2. HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT

- People have lived in Brněnská kotlina since 700,000 B.C.

-The area was settled in the ages of the Great Moravian Empire.

- Since the 11th century there was a castle, which was the residence of the appanage prince.

- Since the 13th Century there were foreigners coming to the city (e.g. Germans, Flanders and Wallons). There were also Jews, who created their own quarter in the place of today's Square of Liberty.

- The city was fenced with a stronge wall including five gates (one of them is today's Měnínská brána).

- The castle of Špilberk was rebuilt to gothic form.

- In the 14th century there were about 1000 houses and almost 11,000 inhabitants living in the city.

- Brno was headed by a city reeve and 12 aldermen.

- Since the mid-14th century Brno was a seat of Moravian Regional Parliament, which met alternately in Brno and Olomouc.

- In the years 1428 – 1430 Brno was under the siege of Hussites, but it survived.

- In the year 1641 Brno became the capital of Morava and two years later it was under the siege of Swedes, but it wasn't conquered. However, the population decreased to 4500 inhabitants.

- In the year of 1805 Napoleon Bonaparte went throught the city before The Battle of Austerlitz (Slavkov)

- In the year 1899 the Technical University was established and 1928 was developed the Brno Exhibition Centre.

- In 1939 It was occupied by Nazis. Nevertheless, it was set free in 1945.

- In the 60s and 70s many neighbouring villages joined the city.

4. INDUSTRY

- Brno has always been an important industrial center for Central Europe

- Economical structure is balanced but the major part of economy is based on industrial production – especially engineering and electrical industry

Industry is very diverse with

The tendency of last years is to specialize industrial production

Brno is popular among small or medium size companies and it helps them with building industrial zones

Big potencial is in electrical industry which makes foreign investors invest in this sector (ABB, IBM, Siemens, etc.)

The oldest industry is textil industry, since 19th century the engineering is growing.

The most famous industrial company is Zetor.

5. ADMINISTRATIVE DIVISION

Brno's administrative division's was complicated (the most complicated in the Czech Rep.)

There were two cadastral amendments and many other reforms

Since 1990 Brno has been divided into 29 autonomous neighborhoods: Each of them has its own Mayor, Council, and a flag

Neighbourhoods are:

Bohunice, Bosonohy, Bystrc, Cernovice, Chrlice, Ivanovice, Jehnice, Jih – Komarov, Dolni + Horni Herspice, Prizrenice, Trnita (part), Jundrov (parts of Jundrov and part of Pisarky), Komin, Kralovo Pole (Kralovo Pole, Ponava, Sadova and part of Cerna Pole), Lisen, Malomerice and Obrany (Obrany and part of Malomerice), Medlanky, Novy Liskovec, Oresin, Reckovice and Mokra Hora, Brno – North (Husovice, Lesna, Sobesice and parts of Cerna Pole and Zabrdovice), Slatina, Stary Liskovec, Brno – Center (City of Brno, Stare Brno, Stranice, Styrice, Veveri, and parts of Pisarky, Trnita and Zabrdovice), Turany (Ivanovice, Dvorska, Holasky, Turany), Utechov, Vinohrady (Vinohrady and parts of Zidenice and Malomerice), Zabovresky, Zebetin, Zidenice (Zabrdovice and Zidenice)

 

6.TRANSPORTATION

Urban mass transportation (MHD):

The history of the urban mass transportation in Brno starts in 1869, when the first horse tram pulled out.

In 1884 began the running of a steam tram, which was reliably of service by the year 1900 (in 1900 its whole network was electrified).

There are 13 tram tram nowadays.

The first trolley bus in Brno pulled out in 1949.

In the 70s came a big development of Brno trolley buses, because many routes were extended to the smaller suburbs around Brno.

The bus transportation began in 1930 already.

In the 90s was a reorganisation of the MHD and the bus routes in the city centre were decommissioned.

It has been possible to go on a boat on the Brno lake since 1946.

Automobile transport

Brno is an important highway junction – D1 (Prague – Jihlava – Brno – Vyškov – Kroměříž)

- D2 ( Brno – Bratislava)

- R46 (Olomouc – Ostrava)

Since 90s builds road link to Viena ( highway R42).

People build Large city ring comprised construction MÚK Hlinky,Dobrovského and Jihlavská, extencion of Žabovřeská Street,building of tunnels Dobrovského,Akátky and Červený kopec.

It would be finished in 2025.

AVIATION:

Airport Brno – Tuřany is about 10 kilometres from city centre far.

Every year was here an International Airshow, but two years ago it was finished because it was disturbing people living in Tuřany, Chrlice, Holásky etc. Last year was built here a new terminal building.

Scheduled flights from Brno are Brno – London (by Ryanair company) , Brno – Munich, Brno – Prague and a lot of charters flights to tourist destination in Mediterranean.
